Designing Motion

9:00AM - 9:45AM

"With great power comes great responsibility" is something you hear often about making things move on the modern web. Well, if that's the case, then we had better really mean it!

We'll look at how to get the most out of your CSS transitions and transforms by going beyond just start and end points and applying our design eye to those ever important in-between parts. That's where the real power of animation lies. We want elegant and meaningful animation, not obtrusive or meaningless fluff! What can we borrow from traditional animation? And what do we need to make our own rules for? We'll find some answers and (I hope) you'll never think of a simple transition the same again.

JavaScript and Web Standards

10:00AM - 10:45AM

With technology moving so fast these days, often website makers overlook proper implementation of the behavior layer resulting in the loss of accessibility and ignored user needs. We will explore examples of how to support progressive enhancement without sacrificing functionality or alienating users.

I will talk about common JavaScript enhanced mistakes that prevent users from enjoying the site experience and look at some solutions on how to overcome those. Accessibility and usability should always be on the forefront of your code; this talk will cover take-away tips and general theory all while keeping those goals of best practices in mind.

Design/Collaborate

11:00AM - 11:45AM

Collaboration is essential to the success of any design. During the course of our careers, designers interact with developers, writers, photographers, illustrators, content strategists — and let's not forget clients. Having successful relationships with them requires demystifying the design process both for them and ourselves.

Project Management for Humans (No Robots Allowed)

2:00PM - 2:45PM

Whether it's on the front lines, behind the scenes or non-existent as a practice in a web design studio, Project Management is critical to every discipline in web development. And, you don't have to be a robot to run a project; simple humans can make sure a project is delivered on time and on budget!

This session will cover the basics on how to manage your project like a pro and keep your clients happy. We'll run a short exercise on the fundamentals of planning a project and discuss other important details to project management, like communications, project approaches, managing expectations, and learning from mistakes.

Faster Design Decisions with Style Tiles

3:00PM - 3:45PM

Web design is a practice that requires balancing many parameters: user needs, technological capabilities, time, budget, emotion, and client preferences. Style and design are often lumped together during the web design process making it hard for a client to make critical decisions that go beyond personal preference. Using deliverables such as Style Tiles designers can employ the same psychological methodologies used in creating pleasant web experiences to create an equally enjoyable approval process. In this presentation Samantha will explain how client input, careful design analysis, style tiles and iterative revisions can lead to better results, satisfied clients and happy designers.

Unraveling the Mobile Web

4:00PM - 4:45PM

Mobile has revolutionized the way we live and the mobile web is playing a crucial role in our new digital landscape.

This session will explain why we need to start prioritizing the mobile web and begin tackling the perpetually-fuzzy mobile context. I'll also introduce best practices to help strategists, UX designers, visual designers and developers execute exceptional mobile web projects.

We'll go over all the juicy bits: why "native vs web" is rubbish, how responsive web design can fit into a mobile strategy, when to create a mobile web app and more. You'll be all set to start asking the right questions and start creating great mobile web user experiences.
